Most of Dr. Bile Muse’s classmates pursued careers in Mogadishu or abroad. He chose differently. Within six months of graduating from SNU’s Faculty of Medicine in 2021, he had moved to Dhuusamarreeb in Galmudug and begun transforming regional healthcare.

Starting with a single room and donated equipment, he expanded the district health centre into a 40-bed hospital in three years, securing funding from Galmudug State, the Global Fund, and diaspora donors. The facility now has an operating theatre, maternity ward, laboratory, and pharmacy. Maternal mortality has fallen 35%.

Dr. Bile received the WHO Somalia Health Hero Award in 2025. “SNU taught me that medicine is a social contract. You take from society by being trained. You pay it back by serving.”
