Somali National University has officially launched its new Faculty of Engineering and Technology in a ceremony attended by government officials, academic leaders, and international partners. The faculty will offer programmes in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Environmental Technology.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdirahman Isse Awale, described the launch as a milestone for Somali higher education. “Engineering capacity is foundational to national reconstruction,” he stated. “This faculty will train the builders, the coders, and the environmental scientists our country urgently needs.”

The faculty will initially enrol 400 students, with plans to expand to 1,200 by 2028. Five internationally qualified faculty members have been appointed.

International Partnerships

SNU has signed memoranda of understanding with three international universities to support curriculum development and staff exchange. Laboratory equipment valued at USD 2.4 million has been donated by partner organisations including the African Development Bank and Gulf-based Somali diaspora foundations.

Programmes Offered

The inaugural intake covers four departments: Civil and Structural Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. All programmes align with Washington Accord international engineering education standards. Applications open at snu.edu.so/engineering. Open day: 20 June 2026.
